Strawberries are among Poland's favorite fruits, the most eagerly awaited seasonal delicacy; however, consumers may currently be put off by their high prices. Polish strawberries can cost over PLN 20 per kilo (about 4.39 Euro). This high price is a consequence of both the adverse weather conditions and the lack of laborers.
At the beginning of May, strawberries appeared on the wholesale market in Bronisze. For now, the supply is small and they are expensive. Domestic strawberries cost PLN 18-22 per kg (3.95-4.83 Euro). They come from greenhouses or plastic tunnels. There are also many imported strawberries; the Greek ones cost around PLN 15 / kg (3.29 Euro) and the Spanish are sold for PLN 12 / kg (2.63 Euro).
Strawberry growers say that in just 2-3 weeks, the fruit's supply will increase significantly; however, producers are unsure about whether they should invest in irrigation and plantation protection, because there are not enough people available for the harvest.
