Japanese researchers working on improving greenhouse tomato cultivation

The National Agriculture and Food Research Organization or NARO is an institution in Japan for conducting research and development on agriculture and food. They have found that the crop yields in their greenhouses could be a lot higher and that about half of the greenhouse workers is 65 years old or over. The NARO is looking for an improvement in yield per square meter and labour.

The NARO has set a goal to establish a regional farming model for each region, to contribute to the enhancement of production sites. They will collaborate with national research institutes, universities and public corporations, to establish farming models adapted to each region. The research first focuses on rice, wheat and soybeans, but they are looking to expand the research to other crops in the future. To be able to incorporate market needs into the research, the Agriculture and Food Business Research Center was established.
