There has been a significant shortage in the radish market over the last few weeks. "Everyone focused on the festive season. After New Year's Day, the supply declined considerably. That is currently causing above-average prices on the market," says Erik de Jong of the Jongfresh radish nursery. This farm is based in Monster, the Netherlands.
"In the end, there was a little too much speculation about a decline in demand. That has now led to a shortage. We are now seeing some recovering in production. It has, of course, not yet been truly cold. And with a few nice sunny days, you see a little growth quickly again." Erik does not expect any exciting changes in the market situation before mid-February. "We are hoping to go into spring on a good level."

Over the years, Jongfresh has become specialized in mainly specialty radishes. They not only supply hand-bundled red radishes. They have white and white-tip radishes in, for instance, mixed packs. "There is an opposite trend with white radish sales at the moment. During the festive season, we had a shortage. Now, there is sufficient supply again," says Erik.

According to this grower, the radish acreage in the Netherlands has increased slightly. Nowadays, competition for radish bushels comes mainly from Italy. For loose radishes, it is from countries such as Portugal, Morocco, and Israel. "A positive development is that we, as radish growers in the Netherlands, are connecting more with each other. It is easy to compete with each other in the domestic market. However, it is much better to win ground with overseas sales together. That is, with a high-quality product," concludes Erik.
