European Union will no longer permit sales of chlorpyrifos

The European Union has confirmed it will no longer permit sales of the widely used actives in insecticides chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl; after 31/01/2020.

The move was expected after the recent report from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that “that no safe exposure level – or toxicological reference value – can be set for the substance.”

Once the commission formally adopts the regulations, member states must withdraw all authorisations for plant protection products containing the active substances. A period of grace for final storage, disposal and use of a maximum of three months may be granted by countries. After any products containing these actives cannot be sold within the EU.

Fera is the UK National Reference Laboratory for the analysis of pesticide residues with experts in the field carrying out tests to verify that a product meets regulatory requirements.

Fera food safety experts can identify (screen) and quantify, residues within samples using state of the art GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS equipment.
