Swiss Federal Council for the time being says 'no'

Facilitate cultivation in greenhouses?

The Swiss National Council wants to facilitate the cultivation of food in greenhouses. The Federal Council says no. A motion from the BDP, which calls for greenhouses on crop rotation areas do not have to be compensated, was carried with 100 to 84 votes. Building a greenhouse on the land would not lead to the loss of arable land, farmer Heinz Siegenthaler (BDP / BE) had argued when entering the motion.

On the contrary, greenhouse cultivation yields are three to four times larger than those of a free range crop. The Federal Council rejected the proposal and referred to recommendations by experts, which provide for a compensation requirement on a case-by-case basis.

Further investigations on the topic are in progress, said Environment Minister Simonetta Sommaruga.
