, was carried with 100 to 84 votes. Building a greenhouse on the land would not lead to the loss of arable land, farmer Heinz Siegenthaler (BDP / BE) had argued when entering the motion.
On the contrary, greenhouse cultivation yields are three to four times larger than those of a free range crop. The Federal Council rejected the proposal and referred to recommendations by experts, which provide for a compensation requirement on a case-by-case basis.
Further investigations on the topic are in progress, said Environment Minister Simonetta Sommaruga.
