Christian Kruse, Haygrove GmbH, on the advantages of tunnel cultivation for berries:

"Extended season, better taste and coloring, reduction of pesticide use"

"Our new substrate hanging systems offer a more comfortable method of working with the berry: no one wants to work on ground level, and at the same time necessary work, such as mowing under the gutters, is facilitated by the suspension system. We would like to show this installation to new and existing customers, That's why we are once again represented at Interaspa praxis and other industry events this year," explains Christian Kruse, commercial director of Haygrove GmbH.

The gutters can be installed in a tunnel of a width of up to 10 meters. To maintain stability, specially shaped tubes are used. Kruse continues: "The chains are not mounted on round tubes in the wider tunnels, but on oval tubes, which is simply more stable."

Pioneer Tunnel
The Pioneer Tunnel will also be presented at the fair. Kruse explains what this type of tunnel is all about: "The Pioneer Tunnel has a large volume of air and a balanced climate, and there's a labor-saving access to tractors, offering high-stability cabling options at a low cost." Among its most important features are the steel rain gutters, full-width electric, mechanical or hand-cranked roller doors and the option for tramlines at the end or inside the tunnel. "All of our tunnels can be constructed in gothic style, which helps maintain the tunnel's stability, with steep sidewalls providing more comfort and space - the plants can be situated close to the edges and the construction also makes it easy for snow to slip off in winter."

The tunnel provides good protection for sensitive berry crops, which can boost the fruit's marketability, says Kruse: "Temperature and humidity fluctuations are reduced and the effective control of the tunnel climate ensures a longer growing season. Being sheltered from the wind also plays a large role in the quality of the fruit." The film is translucent across the spectrum, which is important for the flavor and the taste and coloration: "A final important aspect is the reduction of pesticide use - a factor that plays an increasingly important role in cultivation, not only in Germany but worldwide."
