Italy: Good prices for vegetables

"The summer vegetable campaign is in full swing and expectations are promising. Quotations are also good: the prices of red and green oblong table tomatoes hover around €0.70/kg, cucumbers sell at €0.60/kg, peppers at €1.30/kg and friggitelli peppers at €1.10/kg," explains Aniello and Carmine Migliaro, owners of Azienda agricola San Valentino.

The company is located in San Valentino Torio (SA) and covers 20 hectares of open fields and greenhouses (70%). In addition, it has its own fleet of vehicles equipped with refrigerated unit that make it possible to transport the goods all over Italy and abroad. Thanks to the innovative logistic department, company trucks also work for third parties.

"Table tomato quotations are good this year, while last year's campaign was disappointing with average prices hovering around €0.30/kg. In addition, table tomato crops have increased by 30% this year due to the higher demand."

"Our seasonal vegetables enter the domestic retail chain and supply the Rome and Verona general markets. We produce and package fresh fruit and can supply our buyers daily."

"Bobbis green bean quotations are also positive at €2.30/kg. Around three years ago, we purchased a harvester to resolve the lack of labor. We are now one of the two companies who own such machine in Campania."

"The pepper campaign is also going well, though it requires higher investments in economic and labor terms. Cultivated areas are constant."

"Varietal innovation is essential to keep up with the times. At the same time, fairs are important for training and comparison purposes. We will take part in Fruit Logistica Asia in September. As for the future, we are looking to invest in organic productions as they are more sustainable for the environment and our health."
