Eastern Europe and former CIS countries:

Russia: Price instability in the greenhouse vegetable market

Eastern Europe and the former CIS countries have witnessed an overall change of price tendencies during the whole week 26 of 2019. The main price forming factor was the volume of product offered in the market; moreover, a considerable change occurred in the markets where imported goods were present.

Both the tomato and cucumber markets showed lower price tendencies, which is explained by a gradual increase in supply from local enterprises.

However, in a number of countries in the region, a reverse tendency has been witnessed.

The price lowering tendencies were characteristic of such countries as Russia, Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine. Experts noted the fact that the tomato price dropped most in the areas where during the past week they were the highest.

With that, the tomato prices have increased in Tajikistan and Poland within the week in question, due to shortening of the product offer accompanied by the stable demand from customers.

As a result, by the end of the reporting period, the most expensive greenhouse tomatoes in the region were offered in Ukraine ($1.03/kg on average) and the most accessible ones were sold in Uzbekistan.

A significant reduction in greenhouse cucumber supply in the market of Poland caused a sizeable price increase, resulting in a price of $0.94/kg, which is almost twice as much as the respective data of the previous period. Similar but less dramatic price dynamics were noted in the market of the Republic of Belarus, where the average price increased to $0.39/kg.

With that, due to constant increase in offer, most countries in the region of interest showed cucumber price decline within the reporting period. Experts noticed the maximum drop in price in Ukraine, Tajikistan and less considerably in Russia.

As for the imported goods, only greenhouse tomatoes were sold, the major outbound suppliers for the produce being Poland, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
