Red pepper variety E20B.0246 is now called Maureno

During the tour to cultivation companies Mts H.N.S. Van der Burg and Kwekerij Overgaag BV, Enza Zaden announced the new name of the red pepper variety E20B.0246: Maureno. The crop looks great at both locations. The growers are very pleased with the progress of the cultivation so far. “The quality of Maureno is good. The fruit has a beautiful shape and color. In addition, the fruit continues to color evenly," according to grower Nieki van der Burg.

Good total production
During the tour it soon became clear that the setting of Maureno is easy and regular. The variety is very productive and almost the same size as Maranello. Currently, the average fruit weight is around 210 grams, but this will be slightly lower towards summer. “The results from the trials and screenings were very positive in recent years. The good total production is in particular the main reason that I am now growing Maureno,” says grower Wouter Overgaag.

Work-friendly and correct resistance
Furthermore, the crop is open and continues to grow quickly. That makes it easy to handle in pruning, turning and harvesting. A very strong advantage of the variety is the easy stacking of the fruits. In contrast to some other varieties, Maureno continues nicely with the last setting. The variety is also strong against tip rot and has a Tm: 0-3 resistance. The quality of the variety is excellent with beautiful and uniform fruits. In addition, the fruits color quickly and evenly.

Situation at the growers
Overgaag is cultivating at three locations a total of 24 hectares of red peppers, of which 1.2 hectares are now Maureno, on a traditional 3-stem system. The standard variety is Maranello at Kwekerij Overgaag. Van der Burg Peppers also grows red peppers at three locations, one of which now has 2.3 hectares with Maureno, on a 3-stem V system. Maranello is on the other 11.6ha.
