"This year, Chinese vegetable prices are higher than last year. The main reason for this development is the decline of the surface area devoted to vegetable production in response to the low vegetable prices in 2018. The surface area devoted to winter vegetables in south China showed the highest decline. Another reason is a systematic adjustment in the vegetable industry: farmers now pay more attention to product quality and prefer to produce small volumes of premium products such as full-flavor tomatoes. This development pushes the overall price up. A third reason is growing consumer demand. In the second half of this year, however, the surface area devoted to vegetable production in north China will grow and the high price may come down a bit." this is according to Zhang Xiaosheng of Beijing Biosow Co., Ltd.

"We distinguish two main directions in the development of new tomato product varieties: first, disease-resistant strains. We keep a close eye on the industry and we expect a new wave of tomato disease to begin in south China and move to north China. The frequency of tomato disease increases as does the extent of the areas affected. A disease like that will not only impact the price of tomatoes, but will impact the safety of the entire tomato industry. We therefore focus mainly on tomato varieties that are more resistant to disease. The second development is product quality. We always work hard to improve the flavor of tomato varieties."

"Another important product is the 120 gram TY-resistant pink tomato with a high sugar content and high yield. The market potential for this snack-tomato variety is great, but plantation management requires attention to detail. Cherry tomatoes are always popular but consumers have become increasingly selective (high sugar content, slightly sour flavor). This makes it difficult for farmers to cultivate suitable cherry tomatoes. Furthermore, they have to consider tomato disease resistance, production volume, and the ability to endure storage and transport. We prepare a wide variety of tomato products, but we are not too optimistic about the actual growth of the market."
