Japan: Earthquake resistant tomato greenhouse built in Ofunato

Certhon has realized an 18,000 m2 tomato greenhouse in Ofunato, a port city north of Honshu, Japan. Just off the coast of Ofunato a submarine volcano is located, which means that the city regularly suffers from earthquakes of various strengths. Therefore, the greenhouse had to meet strict earthquake requirements that apply in Japan.

In order to develop a greenhouse that is situated in an earthquake zone with regularly high wind speeds, Certhon had to take a great mechanical load into account in the design. The high-tech greenhouse with Dutch technology is therefore equipped with a Venlo roof system with F-Clean foil. The combination of F-Clean with narrow aluminum profiles - with functionalities for isolation and drainage of condensation water - contributes to a better yield by a light transmittance up to 94%. The high-quality aluminum construction and heavy steel construction with F-Clean foil makes the greenhouse resistant to severe earthquakes.
