Jose María Madrid, from Mercagrisa:

"Shortage of peppers in the market and a very high demand"

The greenhouse pepper season has practically ended in Almeria but continues in Murcia, where producers have been harvesting and selling peppers for about two weeks.

The rains of Holy Week delayed the collection of peppers for a few days and the initial market prices were high due to the scarcity of product.

"There's not much product available at the moment, either here or in the Netherlands, where prices are exorbitant. The demand for Spanish pepper is quite high and prices are high," stated Jose Maria Madrid, from Murcia's Mercagrisa auction.

The short red pepper has achieved prices of € 1.60 to € 1.70 per kilo at auctions, while the price of the short green pepper stands at around € 1.00 per kilo and tends to increase.

Following the trend of the last campaigns, the cultivated area of short pepper (California variety), which continues to gain ground on the classic long pepper (of the Lamuyo variety), has grown again in Murcia this year. However, the total area of pepper remains stable, with forecasts for volumes similar to those of last year.

For now, there is no competition from other third countries such as Morocco, Turkey or Israel, and the best pepper is currently from Murcia, which has just started its campaign.
