Russia: Vegetable production volume growing in Volgograd region

Enterprises specializing in year-round greenhouse vegetable cultivation in Volgograd have produced almost 20% more than in the same period last year.

In accordance with the information from the agricultural committee, cucumbers take up 80% of the overall produce – 11.4 thousand tons since the beginning of the year, while tomatoes have comprised 3 thousand tons. In comparison with last year, only 1.5 thousand tons of tomatoes were harvested within the same period. The Ovoschevod enterprise has become a leader in cucumber production, having supplied over 8 thousand tons of produce. The biggest tomato grower is Volzhsky agricultural complex, who have produced over 2.5 thousand tons or 95% of the overall volume. Other key greenhouse growers are Teplichny and Zarya. Currently the growers have started harvesting lettuce.

The Volgograd region is once again the country's vegetable garden: two years in a row the vegetable production volume has been amounting to 1 million tons. The region is fully sufficient in terms of greenhouse produce and does not require any vegetables to be imported. They continue to increase the volume of the import replacing production due to the state support and realization of the investment projects in the agricultural sphere. Within the past five years, the greenhouse acreage has increased by 39.5 ha.
