Marco Kübler, Fruchtgarten Bayreuth GmbH:

"Asian cuisine is an interesting growth market for us"

In Upper Franconian Bayreuth, since about two years there has been a new wholesale company with a focus on gastronomy. In addition to the wide range of fruit and vegetables, rice, dried goods and various additional products are also supplied to regional restaurateurs of all kinds. Owner Marco Kübler sees an interesting growth market for his company, particularly in the field of Asian cuisine.

Imported goods determine current offers
The fruit trade is currently, in a purely seasonal perspective, in a transitional phase: domestic strawberries and asparagus are gradually coming onto the market, but the rest of the product range mainly sees imported goods from all over Europe. Broccoli, fresh mushrooms and different types of sprouts are standard, but the Spanish-made campaign is slowly drawing to a close. Baby spinach is currently sourced primarily from Italy. In addition, France covers a substantial part of the product range. "Cauliflower, triplets and primeur potatoes are sourced from Holland via France. Above all, these small potatoes, which you hardly have to peel, go well with asparagus and are therefore seeing a good demand. In addition to the start of the regional spring potato harvest in about 5-6 weeks, we will also buy the tubers from Morocco and Cyprus."

Vegetables from the nearby garlic country are arriving onto the market gradually.

The company was founded about two years ago and since then the clientele has developed steadily. "We are doing fine, we are already seeing some growth. Certainly restaurateurs in the region appreciate our service and wide range of products. We also sell a lot of dry goods -from rice to sauces to additional products- to the Asian restaurants."

Common fresh produce such as mushrooms and exotic products from afar are traded in Bayreuth.

Regionality at the top
As soon as the regional harvest campaign starts, the customers from Upper Bavaria increasingly turn to their own products. The demand for regional goods is particularly high seasonally, Kübler confirms: "If the lettuce assortment from regional production is available, we will offer these exclusively." The regional products are also well received by foreign cuisines.
