Ali Macara, Ikram Gbr. Nuremberg:

'Low demand for Turkish peppers after Christmas'

The situation on the German wholesale markets is very subdued, so shortly after the turn of the year. In Nuremberg the market has stabilized as well, after the increased sales during the Christmas season. January is also a quiet month for Turkish retailers, confirms Ali Macara of Ikram Gbr/Macara Fruits, headquartered at the Nuremberg wholesale market.

Pointed peppers and organic vegetables
Although the wholesaler primarily supplies Turkish customers, sales in December also rose significantly. Above all, the Turkish assortment - focus of the company - was quickly sold. "Our peppers in all desired colors -whether red, green or yellow- were selling the best during the Advent season. The the red variety in particular was very popular this year for Christmas. Currently, sales are back at more regular prices." says Mr Macara. Per 500-gram bag, the price currently stands at about €0.90.

The most recent goods shipment brought the wholesaler, among other things, Italian spring onions and organic Spanish vegetables. "We only do organic vegetables when there is an interesting marketing process, and we currently have a few pallets for Holland, paprika mix and Delyca vine tomatoes, but the prices are relatively low, around € 5 per box."

Turkish cabbage
However, seasonal specialties from Turkey are still the trademark of the wholesalers. For the most part, these products are sourced directly from producers in the key growing areas of Turkey. "We are currently selling Turkish cabbage, for example, and although there are German products, our clientele prefer the Turkish cabbages," says Macara.
