José Miguel Hernández, mayor of La Mojonera:

Spain: "Prices should not be set by just a handful of marketers"

Last week, the mayor of La Mojonera, José Miguel Hernández, visited some agricultural farms in the municipality to learn first-hand about the problem of low cucumber prices, which was denounced by several producers in the town.

Hernandez has verified the sector's current concerns, motivated by the prices being paid at the moment. In the case of cucumbers, these "stand at about half the level that they should to allow growers to cover their costs."

Hernández has asked for the various administrations and the sector to take action on the matter and for solutions to be sought to tackle a problem that affects them every year.

For the time being, he said that the City Council of La Mojonera will demand the intervention of the Government of Spain and the Government of Andalusia, "because politicians should sit down and see what the problems are and how to solve them." In his opinion "it is unacceptable for everything to be in the hands of four marketers, and that these are the ones setting the price for the growers."

Hernández stressed the importance of the agricultural sector for the economy of Almeria, and particularly for La Mojonera, as many of its neighbors depend on it. For this reason, he wished to stand "next to the producers in these difficult times."
