Turkey: Hailstorm destroys glass greenhouses in Mersin

Heavy rain and a hailstorm in Silifke, in the province of Mersin, a city located in southern Turkey, have destroyed numerous glass greenhouses in the area and put a stop to the daily lives. Many citizens were unable to leave their homes and almost all cucumber greenhouses in the area were destroyed.

Locals estimate that around 15 – 20 hectares of cucumber greenhouses are damaged and just the cost of glass per 1,000 square meters is around 6,000 – 7,000 USD. So the growers believe their losses are around 8,000 USD per 1,000 square meters, including the cost of product loss. The total loss of all the growers in the area is around 1.2 to 1.6 million USD, and they are hoping that the government will help them to recoup their losses.
