US (SC): Twilley Seeds celebrates 20 years in Hodges

A seed company with over a century of experience is a rarity. One of those is the Otis S. Twilley Company, which has been active for over 103 years. During this period, they’ve moved several times. It was originally founded in Salisbury, Maryland by Mr. Twilley himself. In the mid 1990's, lifetime seedsman George B. Park purchased the Twilley Seed Company and later moved it to Hodges, South Carolina. This year, the staff celebrates their 20th year in its present location.

George and his wife Barbara have worked side by side for 25 years. Both are passionate about seed and about growing. Twilley Seed customers are primarily small farms who sell their produce mostly to local farm markets, local restaurants and grocery stores. “Because taste and quality is important to our customers, it is also very important to us.” Always searching for ways to improve, every year, they grow and judge trials for All America Selections and for selected universities. Twilley Seeds’ seed selections are based on the final evaluations, field data and judge's thoughts. As for their internal process management, Twilley Seeds is currently renovating their office and warehouse space to make operations even more efficient.

Both Twilley Seeds and their sister company GeoSeed can boast a 90% women employed workplace. George says, “Not only do we try to offer quality products at reasonable prices, we share a philosophy of treating employees as family. Our employees are the key to our success." With this philosophy in mind, they conduct company-wide vegetable taste tests and encourage employees to sample and rate a variety of garden bounty. In short, they sow, grow, taste and love what they sell.

In the 2019 catalog, Twilley Seed will offer over 50 new products. Some highlights include: Cauliflower Fioretto, an unusual "broccolini" type of cauliflower; Pak Choi “Asian Delight”, which won an All America Selections award for flavor and garden longevity; Cucumber Iznik, which produces a crazy abundance of small, delicious cukes. In response to customer requests for an Asian long bean, customers can also find Orient Wonder.

Twilley Seed’s new 2019 catalog is mailed out this week.
