"Wood fiber blends offer increased sustainability"

Gro-Bark, a Walker Environmental Company, is continuing to offer horticultural wood fiber blends as another sustainable mix ingredient in many different forms available to the grower.

Gro-Bark has been a producer of two sustainable, functional and beneficial soil mix ingredients for many years – composted bark and leaf & yard compost. In order to supply complete mixes, Gro-Bark has relied on sphagnum peat supply as has the industry in general.

Over the past decade, wood fiber substrates have evolved to the point where several have been proven to replace all or some sphagnum peat and/or perlite in soilless mixes. Using 100% recycled sawmill wood chips as a base material, wood fiber products are highly sustainable. European growers and consumers have decided they want ‘peat-free’ mixes for maximum sustainability and Gro-Bark has been making mixes that meet that standard.

Gro-Bark has a continued alliance with a U.S. producer of wood fiber product. They are offering the following wood fiber blends:

  • Sphagnum Peat – HydraFiber blends
  • Greenhouse Mix with HydraFiber
  • Perennial Mix with HydraFiber
  • CPM Composted Pine Bark – HydraFiber blends

In addition to the above mixes, Gro-Bark specializes in creating custom recipes that are unique to each growers’ style, growing environment and watering practices. All are formulated with pH, EC and nutrient demands in mind. The blending facility in Caledon, Ontario produces complete mixes in bulk and semi-bulk batches on a just-in-time basis.

Meet the Gro-Bark team at the Canadian Greenhouse Conference in Booth #1107.
