Local-for-local production for the whole of Bavaria: starting this spring, Josef Steiner, operating from his greenhouse in Kirchweidach, is planning to achieve exactly that. About 280,000 pepper plants are being planted as we speak. The 11 hectares will be heated with geothermal energy. The greenhouse itself was built by Dutch companies.
Steiner’s tomatoes and peppers will be available in Rewe supermarkets throughout Bavaria, and marketed as regional products.
After the peppers, the tomatoes will be planted in mid-March, on approximately 6.5 hectares. The peppers take up about 5.3 hectares. Steiner believes harvest will continue until November.
