Mexico: Tomatoes surpass avocados and become second most exported product

The dynamism of Mexican agro-food exports continued in the first four months of the year, reporting a 16.2% growth, reaching 3.183 million dollars, compared to 2.738 million dollars in the same period of 2017.

Meanwhile, imports grew by 15.8%, reaching 2.296 million dollars. This entails that there was a surplus of 887 million dollars.

In the period January-April 2018, the accumulated value of exports of the agro-food sector reached 12,437 million dollars, showing an annual increase of 12.2%, compared to the 11,082 million of the same period of 2017.

Accumulated imports grew by 4.3% to 8,494 million dollars, slightly higher than the amount obtained in the same period of 2017 (8,145 million dollars).

"The above confirms that the agro-food sector continues to report surpluses, with 3,943 million dollars; 34.3% more than in 2017, when the surplus stood at 2,936 million dollars," said Juan Carlos Anaya, director of the Group of Agricultural Market Consultants.

In this period, beer stayed at the top of the ranking, with 1,410.1 million dollars, showing an annual growth of 22.4%. Tomatoes took the second place from avocados, with 942.4 million dollars, 32.7% more than the figure reported in the same period of 2017. Avocados ranked third, with an annual increase of 10.7 percent.

Berry exports also continue to grow; they are in fifth place with 596.6 million dollars, and tequila stands sixth with 486.9 million dollars.
