Grown in Canada, US & Mexico
Gourmet Green Tomatoes to become more popular for chefs
When you think of green tomatoes, does your mind automatically picture them fried (just like in the movie) but they have lots of other uses and aren't just grown in the US. How about pickled, in a salsa, salad or frittata? Nobody said that tomato pasta sauce always had to be red either.
Gourmet green tomatoes are being grown in Canada, the US and Mexico, despite the perception that they are an American only specialty. “The perception of green tomatoes is definitely getting better with every dish that is created utilizing them…and of the research I have done I think green tomatoes entered the American culinary scene in the Northeast and Midwest and eventually made their way down south,” says Jimmy Coppola. As chefs continue to create flavorful and interesting dishes from green tomatoes he believes you’ll eventually find them on menus from coast to coast.
Westmoreland has been offering Gourmet Green Tomatoes for some time and while there’s always been a market for them Coppola says over the years the demand has consistently grown. Their TopLine Farms branded tomatoes are available in a two-pack, four-pack, six-pack, 5lb. box, 10lb. box, and 15lb. box. Foodservice packs (a more bulk-style pack) are also offered.
Green tomatoes are an item Westmoreland can offer year-round with availability out of their three growing regions in order to help offset the short time they’re out of production in Canada during the winter. “Supply has been consistent through the winter and we are currently picking locally in Canada as well.”
Since fruits and vegetables come in a myriad rainbow of colors, it’s fitting to market an assortment of varieties and colors under the TopLine Farms brand. “Offering a green tomato was a natural fit.”
