NL: First harvest from new Tomato Experience Center

The first harvest of the brand new De Ruiter Experience Center is complete. Last week, Jan Kamper cut the first tomatoes from the lighted cultivation. Construction of the new demo-greenhouse started in June. October 18 was the planting date for the lighted tomatoes.

Small and large
The lighted part of the greenhouse is divided in two by the walkway. On one side are the small tomatoes and on the other side the tomatoes from the larger segment. In the lighted greenhouse there are 269 different varieties and a large number of rootstocks.

In each part of the greenhouse, 600 small fields have been organized. Many varieties have been there a few times already. This increases data reliability. "The number of varieties is therefore not larger than in the old TEC, but the fields are larger and there is more repetition, so that we can collect better and more reliable data."

The small segment has DRC564 as reference variety and the cultivation technique is controlled according to this reference as well. This cherry vine tomato requires a generous irrigation. The reference variety in the large segment is Merlice.

In the unlighted part, the plants are placed on December 19. Everything is ready to fill the 4,800 m2. The fields have already been divided.

Meeting center
It turned out to be a small party, because De Ruiter has taken quite a risk with this new meeting center. The building will be used intensively. The conference rooms and the atrium can also be made available as a meeting location, for symposia and trade missions. In the greenhouse, besides tomatoes, also peppers and cucumbers will be cultivated. The buildings are constructed in such a way as to meet phytosanitary requirements.

Zantman and Brabander
Paul Zantman and Rob Brabander will cultivate here in close consultation with John van der Knaap. John is guiding the center from De Ruiter. It always takes time getting used to a new greenhouse. Paul is satisfied: "The technical start-up was good." In the greenhouse a lot of sensors are used. This way, data is made transparent for the customer. The more information, the better the cultivation can be optimized.

The first harvest was presented to the alderman of Economic Affairs of Lansingerland municipality, Mr. Abee and to EMEA director of De Ruiter Seeds, Ibrahim el Menschawi.
