"The development plan is rather interesting, especially since the variety is much appreciated. Producers are pleased with both quality and quantities," explains Gianluca Baruzzi from Crea Forlì.
Pir5 breeder Walther Faedi adds: "Brazil understood this variety's characteristics better than Italy. The flesh is firm and the fruit has good organoleptic qualities. It was developed for southern Italy, but adapts well to northern climates as well. Organic cultivation techniques are often implemented in Brazil and the strawberries adapt well to them too."
Brazilian producers have been capable of managing this variety. They understood it needs few inputs, as it expresses better when fertilising is not excessive. It needs little nitrogen and density must be kept low when sowing. Plants are vigorous, so patterns must be wide for best results.
Brazil uses fresh plants planted in April. Harvesting starts in June and continues until December. Demand is good as the organoleptic qualities are much appreciated. Evidently, the Brazilians managed to make it stand out in stores so consumers can buy the fruit again and again.
