China: Rain benefits production of Yunnan Baoshan cucumbers

"Baoshan, Yunnan, is famous for its Zhongnong No. 106 cucumbers. This breed is one of a series of cucumber breeds that was developed in 2005 by the Chinese Agricultural Vegetable and Flower Research Institute. The series is currently grown on around 850-1,200 hectares (8,500-12,000 mu) in Baoshan. No. 106 is the most well-known of them. For many years, the supply has not been able to meet the demand," according to Mr. Li, producer and seller of Yunnan Baoshan cucumbers.

Cucumber production

"Our open air cucumber fields are located in Lujiang in Baoshan, Yunnan, totalling over 1,000 hectares (10,000 mu). Every year, our cucumbers are on the market from the middle of October until December. Because of this year's suitable weather with much rain, and an increase in the production area, the cucumbers grow better, increasing the market supply by approximately 20%. The prices have also increased somewhat."

Yunnan green beans

"Compared to other breeds, the No. 106 cucumbers are shiny and straight, with a short stem, and they look identical. The taste is crunchy and sweet, and absolutely not bitter. These are the reasons that our cucumbers have been selling so well for many years. Apart from Baoshan, they are also the main breed in other provinces, like Guangdong, Guizhou, Fujian and Guangxi, taking up around 30% of the production area."

High quality tomatoes

"Apart from cucumbers, Lujiang also has over 1,000 hectares (10,000 mu) of green beans and tomatoes. Our high quality vegetables are sold through traditional sales channels to distributors and supermarkets in first and second tier cities in China. We are currently discussing with e-commerce platforms as well. We are hoping to use the internet to bring our products to more consumers."
