China: Price of Shandong Zibo cucumbers doubles

Since the national holiday, because of the rainy weather and drop in temperature, this season's vegetable production in Linzi District in Zibo, Shandong, is reaching its end. The vegetable supply is dropping, and the prices of many different vegetables are rising compared to the peak season in the middle of September. The largest increase can be seen in the cucumber price, which went from 1.55 yuan per 500 gram to 3.25 yuan, an increase of 110%.

Because of the rain and the drop in temperature, the vegetable prices did not decrease after the national holiday, but increased instead. The large drop in temperature slows down vegetable production, and decreases the harvest. The rain, on the other hand, damages the produce. Especially leafy vegetables easily start to rot. It is estimated that, because of the weather, the vegetable price will keep fluctuating in the near future.
