Mexico: Monsanto pledges $100,000 for earthquake rescue and relief efforts

Monsanto will donate $100,000 to assist with rescue and relief efforts in response to the 7.1 earthquake that struck Mexico City on Tuesday, Sept. 19. At the same time, the company is exploring how to offer support in communities and agricultural areas in the path of Hurricane Maria and other storms that are churning in the Atlantic this week.

To assist Mexico City rescuers in the search for survivors through massive amounts of rubble and debris, $50,000 will be used to purchase tools and other equipment for emergency workers. As conditions continue to be assessed, the remaining $50,000 will be donated to assist with the needs of those impacted by the disaster. Nearly a month ago, an 8.1 earthquake struck Mexico as several hurricanes and tropical storms were approaching the country.

“When catastrophic devastation is unexpected, we know that it’s critical to step into the situation and lend support wherever we can as a company,” said Al Mitchell, President of the Monsanto Fund and Vice President of Community Relations for Monsanto Company, which has an office in Mexico City. “We’re grateful that all Monsanto employees are safe, but we know that their extended networks are just beginning to reconnect on what’s truly needed in the region. Our hope is that we can apply approximately half of these funds to intermediate-term needs.”

Monsanto has five locations across Mexico. The company will continue to assess the earthquake’s impact on its employees and sites there. In addition to the company’s Mexico City donation, Monsanto is also encouraging employees to donate to www.SavetheChildren.org through this link Mexico Earthquake Children's Relief Fund - Save the Children. Monsanto will match all employee contributions to the company’s designated earthquake relief efforts.
