Cogeca underlines key role of agri-cooperatives
Cogeca President Thomas Magnusson said “Agri-cooperatives play a key role in improving farmers’ positioning in the food chain and in helping them to add value to their produce and to market it. Recent studies released by the EU Commission show that farmers who belong to cooperatives get a better price for it. Agri-cooperatives also create economies of scale and offer farmers greater certainty vis a vis receiving their payments on time”.
The slogan of the 2017 International Day of Cooperatives on July 1 is "Cooperatives ensure no one is left behind" which Cogeca welcomes. The 2017 International Cooperative Day marks an important occasion to highlight how the farmer takes an active part in deciding how their cooperatives grow and their business develops. Members of Cogeca, the voice of European Agricooperatives, have organized several events during the week and across the European Union.
The celebrations have provided the opportunity to promote the cooperative model of enterprises, its driving principles and the value created, which with long term vision, benefits its farmer members, even during difficult times.
The International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated on the first Saturday of July every year. Its goal is to increase awareness of cooperatives and to promote the movement's successes and principles, as well as to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other stakeholders, including local, national and international governments. It first started in 1993 when the United Nations recognised and reaffirmed that cooperatives have an important role to play in economic, social and cultural development.
