First strawberries harvested in LED trial

Early december the first strawberries were harvested in the LED trial of ABZ Seeds at Proeftuin Zwaagdijk. The F1-hybrid strawberries of the Delizzimo breed were planted in week 44. The purpose of the trial is to grow flavorful strawberries in winter in a sustainable way.

A winter crop with an ever-bearing strawberry breed under growlight makes it possible to meet a winter demand for flavor-rich strawberries. Of course these greenhouse strawberries should be clearly distinguishable in terms of flavor from the imports from South Europe. In addition, there is a notable demand for sustainably grown products. ABZ has amply researched the flavor and cultivation possibilities of Delizzimo in winter since 2013, with positive results.

For the second year in a row Strawberry grower Brookberries in Venlo currently has a Delizzimo winter crop under Son-T assimilation lighting. The possibilities of sustainable cultivation under LED lighting are being researched in collaboration with ABZ Seeds and Proeftuin Zwaagdijk.
