Despite an atypical production calendar, the 2016 tomato season has increased in both quantity and prices. According to an Agreste publication, French production should reach 620,500 tons this year (up 4% compared to 2015 and 8% compared to the five year average). The situation varies between regions with a 9% increase in the West, 15% in the South West, but a decrease in the South East and Centre West.
The 2016 season was atypical. After a good start in the spring, bad weather conditions delayed the peak in production from July to August.
Prices were sustained in July, due to the delay, and they remained stable thanks to a strong demand in August due to the summer weather. Prices recovered in October following a decrease in September and were 5% above the prices recorded in October 2015.
