Herbs are the second largest US greenhouse crop

According to the the most current U.S. Census of Agriculture figures for crops produced under protection, herbs are currently the second largest crop grown in a controlled environment. With 396 hectare, tomatoes are still the largest crop grown under glass. Cucumbers come at a third place with a total of 102 hectare and lettuce is the fourth largest crop with 40 hectares.

The “other crops” category is described as production not included in the other 6 categories. This includes vegetable crops such as spinach, squash, onions, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, etc. All together, these crop account for a total of 162 hectare.

The total number of protected cropping operations saw a big increase over the last couple of years, from 1476 operations in 2009 to 2521 operations in 2014.
