Mexico: Cucumbers in Zacatecas rotting due to rain

Twenty percent of this year's cucumber production has been lost because of the rains in recent weeks, affecting at least 200 families in Fresnillo that work this crop.

According to data from Secampo, El Mineral has 120 hectares established for growing cucumber.

Guillermo Saucedo Estrada, one of the leading producers of cucumber, stated that they had harvested less than 10 tons per hectare in 2016, which means they had up to 240 tons in losses.

Each kilogram is sold at approximately three pesos for the wholesale market, so losses could exceed 720,000 pesos.

The product from Fresnillo is sold in the town and in other states of Mexico, including Aguascalientes, Durango, and Nuevo Leon.

Due to the losses, producers won't be able to sell their product to some places, despite the good prices they were paid.

He said that this year's first harvest had been favorable and they had expected an optimal production but that the frequent rains had caused the product to rot.
