Rubber duck tomato surprises growers

When staff at the People and Gardens Nursery, which helps people with learning disabilities and mental health issues, went to pick their latest crop they were surprised by an unusual shaped tomato, which resembled a rubber duck.

With its 'wings' outstretched and the traditional yellow colour it looks incredibly similar to the popular bath toy.

The team, based in St Austell, Cornwall, grow fruit and vegetables which go in "veg bags" to be delivered locally.

Manager Ken Radford said: "We picked the tomato off one of our plants. We get all sorts of shapes and sizes but this was particularly unusual.

"If you look at it from certain angles it looks like a mouse but it also looks like a duck.

"We just thought we'd have a little bit of fun. We said on Facebook we're looking to grow different animals and interestingly enough a few people believed it.

"We get weird shapes all the time, we've had some that look like gargoyles."

He added: "It's just part of the fun of the project and it is an important part for us. We quite often look at other vegetables we have grown and ask 'what do you see?'''
