In the lead up to Ramadan, tomatoes were priced at between 1-1.5 Turkish lira a kilo, now this has increased to 3-4 lira. Bursa Mobile Marketeers Chamber President Bulent Gur stated "Tomatoes have experienced an increase in price due to the transition from greenhouse to field growing and high temperatures. Hopefully soon they will return to their normal levels.’’
Good quality tomatoes are being sold for at least 3 lira a kilo, but according to Gur this has nothing to do with the month of Ramadan, ‘’Generally fruit and vegetable prices are good at the moment, due to an abundance of goods. It wasn’t like this last year. This year marketeers are forced to throw away goods because they are rotting. God willing things will return to normal soon.’’
Marketeer Ahmet Ekinci said that the intense sunshine in the fields is adversely affecting the produce, ‘’We’re in a transition period, there are less tomatoes in the fields but demand is high. Our profits are low because we’re having to throw out rotten produce.’’
