April 30 to May 6
Huge drop in Ukrainian fruit, veg prices
For the week April 30 to May 6, Fruit-Inform reports that the Ukrainian fresh produce price index fell by 20.6%. Moreover, over the past three weeks, fruit and vegetable prices became on average 43.5% lower.
''Prices of three fresh produce categories have more than halved: early white cabbage, greenhouse cucumbers and strawberries,'' says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. ''It should be noted that a decrease in prices could have been even more significant if it were not for rises of 10% and 7.7% in prices of onions and table beets, respectively.''
Prices of early white cabbage have for the first time in this season fallen below those fixed for last year's produce. As a result, the demand for early produce sharply grew. Meanwhile, prices of last year's white cabbage also went down due to a decrease in the demand for this fresh produce category in the Ukrainian market.
As regards fruit prices, they were stable last week except for strawberries.
