Grow your own ketchup

Heinz joins horticultural hype

Mini vegetable gardens here, home growing systems there. Homegrown fruits and vegetables are a huge hype. Next to get on board is Heinz. A bottle of ketchup now comes with seeds to grow your own tomato plants.

Heinz is giving away the tomato seeds in 500 stores. Heinz Tomato Ketchup buyers can also get a free packet of Heinz tomato seeds. In addition, customers can win a Heinz Gardening kit.

‘Growers’ can upload a photo of their efforts on the special promotional website. The winner is allowed to send Heinz their homegrown tomatoes, from which actual ketchup will be made. The company wants to show that there is nothing mysterious about their products. "Heinz ketchup has a long shelf life outside the refrigerator. People think that this must be because of chemicals. We want to show what’s in the product."
