Netherlands: Aquaponic lettuce under LED at Fresh-Care Convenience

Fresh-Care Convenience B.V., part of the Staay Food Group will be realising a new production location for prepared vegetables and ready meals in Dronten, the Netherlands. A notable part of the new production site is the City Farming section. This is a conditioned area in which lettuce will be grown in water under LED lighting and without daylight. This project will be realized in close cooperation with other parties and educational institutions.

Increasing demand for prepared vegetables, main-course salads and ready meals means that the current production facility with 8500 m2 floor space is no longer sufficient. Halfway through last year it was therefore decided to begin making plans for new premises.

On Thursday, 10 March 2016 Heembouw, from Roelofarendsveen (the Netherlands), and Fresh-Care Convenience reached agreement concerning the construction of a modern production facility with a total floor space of more than 27,000 m2. The new production facility will be constructed in the new ‘De Poort van Dronten’ Business Park, a stone's throw from Fresh-Care Convenience's current location. It goes without saying that the new location will fully meet the high standards required for processing foodstuffs.

Staay Food Group has purchased a 32 hectares Greenfield site for the new premises. It is the intention that supply companies will also relocate to the new business park. The definitive plans have been developed in close cooperation with the municipality of Dronten.
