Japanese company builds greenhouses in Russia's Far East

JGC, Japan's biggest oil and natural gas plant engineering company, is getting its greenhouse agribusiness off the ground in Khabarovsk, a city in Russia's Far East known for its brutally cold winters.

JGC Evergreen was launched in February 2015 and started shipping cucumbers a little over a year later, at the end of last February. Its greenhouses already boast a combined area of 25,000 sq. meters, and plans call for expanding the space further, to 100,000 sq. meters, in order to produce over 1,000 tons of fruit and vegetables a year.

The catalyst for JGC Evergreen came when Tomoyuki Igarashi, who is now its president, noted the lack of fresh vegetables in the Far East during winter.

Igarashi gained support for the Far East venture from Yoshihiro Shigehisa, JGC group's chairman emeritus, who has been taking a positive stance toward economic cooperation between Japan and Russia.

The Russian government is paying close attention to the project, as it is keen to develop the Far East and secure alternatives to food imports. Last month, Yuri Trutnev, Russia's deputy prime minister and a close aide of President Vladimir Putin, visited the greenhouse complex for an inspection tour.
