US (CA): Organic radish growth slowed by adverse weather conditions
California organic radish growers are reporting low yields this season as cold and wet weather have stunted growth of winter product.
“[The weather] is the biggest variable,” says Brian Peixoto of Lakeside Organic Gardens, an organic produce grower based out of Watsonville, CA. Peixoto’s company grows its radishes out of Watsonville for most of the year, but shifts to Hotville in California’s Imperial Valley for the winter months.
Peixoto says that conditions this year in the Imperial Valley have been poor for radish growers in the region, as El Nino weather patterns have wreaked havoc on the area’s farms. “This year's yields are lower due to cold weather and rain in the Imperial Valley,” says Peixoto.
While Lakeside does not release public figures for its production levels or product pricing, Peixoto says that he and other growers have seen prices rise as a result of the decrease in supply. “The markets are very high right now due to limited production across all shippers.”
