US (MN): Organic farming continues upward trend

Minnesota fell just five farms short of making it onto the Top 10 list of U.S. states that have the most organic farms, according to a news release from the United States Department of Agriculture. The 2014 Organic Survey included both organic crop and livestock farms, the USDA said, and data on acreage, production and sales.

Minnesota came in at number 11 with 512 farms accounting for 4 percent of the nation's organic farms, just below number 10 Maine with 517 farms. California led the pack with more than 2,800 farms, and our neighbor to the east, Wisconsin, was No. 2 with 1,228. The seven other states with the nation's most organic farms included: New York with 917 farms, Washington with 716, Pennsylvania with 679, Iowa with 612, Vermont with 542, Ohio with 541 and Oregon with 525.
