Hungary: 54% increase in industrial tomato production

According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), in 2014 the country had a total of 1.88 thousand hectares of tomato crops which yielded 153.1 thousand tonnes of the product.

Even though Hungary's greenhouse tomato acreage has been reduced by half over the last ten years, falling to 400 hectares, the yield has steadily increased and exceeded 110 thousand tonnes. As for industrial tomatoes, statistics show that the volume has grown by 54 percent in 2015 compared to the previous year, reaching 105 thousand tonnes.

The price received by round tomato producers was 4 percent higher on average (HUF* 436/kg), on the vine tomatoes were 10 percent more expensive (HUF 542/kg), and cocktail tomatoes have seen their prices drop by 10 percent (HUF 822/kg) compared to week 48 of the previous year.
