Australian seed breeder Abundant Produce goes public

The Australian vegetable seed company, Abundant Produce Limited, has announced its plans to publicly list on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

Just five years after its establishment in partnership with The University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) at Cobbitty in Western Sydney, Abundant Produce has begun selling seed to a number of international partners. The resulting crops have demonstrated impressive results in terms of yield and tolerance to adverse growing conditions. Abundant Produce has now made significant steps towards realising its mission of enabling farmers around the world to grow high quality and high yielding crops under non-ideal conditions, with reduced energy and cost inputs.

Abundant Produce’s chief research scientists, Dr Nabil Ahmad and Graham Brown, have been instrumental in bringing the company’s new vegetable seed varieties to market. By applying scientific expertise while breeding under harsh Australian conditions, a range of vegetable varieties with high yields and tolerance to extreme environmental conditions have been developed, making them suitable not only for high tech greenhouses but also for open fields and other low tech environments.

“Our company and products are there to help farmers around the world,” said Abundant Produce’s Research Director, Graham Brown. “Our work has been guided by our ethical charter, which is focused on high yielding seed varieties; seeds that a farmer in Asia or the Middle East can readily access and use with confidence.”

Abundant Produce has now produced a range of cucumber varieties that are being sold commercially, and plans to ramp up its breeding programs for other vegetables over the coming years.

“The company’s ASX listing will provide us with additional funding to accelerate our programs and increase our resources,” said Abundant Produce’s Chairman, Vince Logan. “Australia is well known for its excellence in agriculture sciences, and Abundant Produce is a realisation of this expertise. As well as developing programs for other seeds for a range of agricultural, medicinal and herbal products, we are also open to acquiring similar types of businesses, both in Australia and globally.”
