Bejo is taking over Agrisemen with effect from 29 June 2015, which allows Bejo to acquire a market position in lettuce breeding. Agrisemen sees this joining of forces as an opportunity to rapidly expand its business operations.
Bejo in Warmenhuizen is a global player in the breeding and production of seeds for vegetable crops, with a wide range and a well-developed international network. Agrisemen in Breda has specialised over the years in lettuce breeding.
Growing market segment
"Lettuce is a popular vegetable and a major global crop. It fits very well into our product range and the crop plan of our clients," explained John-Pieter Schipper, CEO of Bejo. "Agrisemen has extensive knowledge and an excellent lettuce breeding program. This collaboration would therefore be a great addition to our current product range." "With Bejo as a partner we are gaining access to an extensive international sales and distribution network and the latest research technologies," said Jack Burgers, Managing Director of Agrisemen. "This allows us to achieve our growth ambitions quicker. For us it was a conscious decision to seek an alliance with a Dutch family business where we would be a welcome addition with our product range."
Integration of the lettuce range
Jack Burgers will remain involved in the organisation and he will play an important role in the next two years in the integration of the lettuce product range within the Bejo organisation. The premises of Agrisemen in Breda will remain as breeding stations in which Bejo will continue to invest in the coming years. Besides lettuce Agrisemen also has climbing beans, Brussels sprouts and pointed cabbage in its range. These products will continue under the well-known brand name of Agrisemen after the acquisition, because both companies have a strong position in the market. There will not be any redundancies as a result of this acquisition.
