Italy: ISI Sementi's Pixel F1 tomatoes conquer Verona

Pixel F1 is a type of plum tomato that is still making news years after it was launched on the market by ISI Sementi Spa.

Over the years, Pixel F1 has become a reference variety in its segment and is very well known by both retailers and local markets.

The main characteristics that contributed to its success are: unmistakeable sweet flavour, shiny red colour and good consistency. In addition, the rachis is fleshy and remains green for many days - a testimony to the freshness of the produce.

What is more, the fact that it is cultivated in areas famous for their tomatoes such as Sicily, Campania and Latina is also a guarantee of high-quality supplies throughout he year.

A few years ago, some companies in the Verona area needed a product that had an excellent taste to stand out on the market, and they chose Pixel F1. The variety therefore proved it could also adapt to Northern Italy conditions.

One of these companies was Solefrutta, located in Villafranca di Verona, where Pixel F1 was sided with the production of oblong tomatoes.

The business is run by the Bampa family. Luca is in charge with cultivation and with the management of the commercial farm. "Pixel F1 was an excellent surprise, especially considering how complicated the 2015 campaign has been. It enabled us to maintain good prices and quality is exceptional. I transplanted ungrafted plants on fields and they proved rustic and vigorous with no setting problems."

"We are currently harvesting the 12th trusses and plants remain healthy, so we will continue harvesting over the 20th. Tomatoes are collected and taken to our stand in the Verona wholesale market. Their quality and flavour are unmistakeable, so much so that people recognise them quite easily."

Marco Bastoni, ISI Sementi's Product Manager, commented by saying that "seeing the great potential this variety has years after its first introduction on the market is fantastic. As a company, we hope what we do, our professionalism and the quality of our R&D work will enable us to keep supporting and meeting the demands of an ever-evolving market."
