Italy: Tomato prices are dropping but consumption is still good

Overlapped productions in many areas in Italy led to a drop in wholesale prices in the last 7/10 days. On the one hand, Southern companies prolonged their season and many can now supply produce all year round but, on the other, the North started producing too after a slight delay. Volumes are abundant in Veneto, Lombardy and Campania.

As Mario Tartari from Eruofrut explains, "prices are half of what they were. Despite this, quality is high and consumption is good too. Sale prices of plum tomatoes hover between €1.50 and €1.70/kg, whereas Piccadilly are sold at €0.80-1.00."

"Bunch tomatoes are suffering a little more as they are sold at €0.50-0.60/kg, though younger and high-quality plants can easily compete with Dutch produce with prices between 80 cents and €1."

"There are a lot of cherry tomatoes from old plants on the market, which tend to turn yellow, and they are sold at 70/80 cents. Once again, prices go up for younger plants."

"Salad tomatoes are doing quite well - consumption of the beefsteak and oblong varieties and produce from Battipaglia is good, holding prices up at €0.80-1.00 and even €1.20/kg."
