Prices for lettuce out of California have picked up in the last two weeks. But as warm weather spurs production, volumes could increase and prices could come down.
“As far as everything goes, lettuce markets are semi-high,” said Charlie Bozzo of Silva Farms. “Over the course of the last two weeks, the price range has reached between 13 and 18 dollars.” On June 19, prices out of Salinas and Watsonville were between $16.00 and $17.56 for a carton of iceberg lettuce 24s. Out of Santa Maria, prices for a carton were between $14.00 and $17.95.
“What happens in the next few weeks kind of depends on the weather,” said Bozzo. “The heat is supposed to make the lettuce grow, so it should push the fields. It's hard to predict, but if the heat comes like it's supposed to, then we should have more lettuce.”
