Wim Gijzen, Anthura:

"Anthurium traditional crop for many Asian growers"

The popularity of the Phalaenopsis increases in many continents. However, for Anthura the pot anthurium is still a very successful crop in Asia. "The anthurium is a traditional crop for many Asian growers" says Anthura's Wim Gijzen.

Anthura is a breeder and propagator of anthurium and phalaenopsis varieties for both cut flowers and potted plants. However, at the Horti Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, they mainly showed their anthurium varieties. "In China, Taiwan and also Vietnam, horticulture is improving and offers many chances for our phalaenopsis varieties, but in many Asian countries like Thailand, the cultivation techniques are still of low to mid-tech and I do not expect them to improve quickly on the short term" says Wim.

According to Gijzen, the anthurium provides better chances on the short term because it also requires less techniques to cultivate them. "This is why we prominently showed our new and existing anthurium varieties at the Horti Asia."

However, looking at the worldwide demand for anthuriums and phalaenopsis , Anthura sees clear possibilities for both species in different continents. "In Mexico the phalaenopsis is quite unknown and growers are now starting to see the possibilities of growing this plant".
