Italy: Bacco F1- the leading MedHermes cocktail tomato in Almeria

Bacco F1 cocktail tomatoes from MedHermes Vegetable Seeds are once again leaders of Almeria's greenhouse sector.

Long-cycle greenhouse cultivated areas have been increasing for five years straight and growers are very satisfied, especially those members of cooperatives such as CASI-Vicasol and private groups like Ecosur, Luis Andujar and Field Paradise.

Bacco F1 production in Almeria in January.

"The good tolerance to long cycles, the resistance to the Tyclv virus and resistamce to cracking means Bacco F1 is one of the main products for many producers in the area."

"The tomatoes are becoming increasingly popular in Northern Europe (Germany, England, Poland, Austria and France) thanks to the many supermarket chains that started selling them."

Bacco F1 characteristics:

  • Bright red colour
  • 40-45 mm grade
  • Average weight per fruit 40 gr
  • Bunch with max. 6-8 fruit
  • Long shelf life (LSL)
  • Sugars higher than acids
Thanks to these characteristics, Bacco F1 meets European demands for cocktail tomatoes with distinctive grades and flavour.

.

According to MedHermes, "currently, at least 25% of cherry bunch tomatoes in the Mediterranean production areas (Almeria/Malaga - Agadir - Sicily) are sold as cocktail tomatoes if grades are above 35 mm. Many supermarket chains buy cherry because of the lack of cocktail tomatoes."

"Thanks to Bacco F1 and to the work of MedHermes Vegetable Seeds is carrying out via its new tomatocult.com blog, European consumers looking for real cocktail tomatoes will soon find them in their nearest supermarket."

"We expect the sector to grow both in terms of cultivated hectares and European consumption because the potential is great. All this will also involve other production areas such as Sicily."
