Overview of greenhouse vegetable prices week 11

In Europe, the supply with greenhouse vegetables from Almeria is coming to an end. There are less Spanish bell peppers and cucumbers available. The Dutch and Belgium production is about to begin. In Holland the cucumbers growers are producing since January and since a week of six the harvest of green Bell peppers has begun. Last week a few Dutch orange, red bell peppers came on the market. This increasing European production has leaded to lower prices for Spanish product, as the quality in Spain is decreasing at the end of the production season.

The start of the season for the Dutch growers of green bell peppers was a bit disappointing with low prices, in some cases the Dutch bell peppers received lower prices than the Spanish peppers. Now that the bell pepper production in Almeria is about to end in two weeks, the Dutch growers will only have competition from Spanish growers in Murcia. Due to the cold wather in Murcia, this harvest is also delayed, which should result in better pricing for Dutch bell peppers.

The Israeli bell pepper growers suffered from bad weather which resulted in lower yields and quality.

All of these factors should result in stable pricing for colored Dutch bell peppers, due to low supplies and stable demand

Ukraine

Remarkable pricing news this week came from Ukraine; in a local supermarket in Kiev, the prices for imported vegetable reached sky high pricing. A kilo of imported Dutch cherry tomatoes was sold against 36,60 euro per kilo!
