Large heating costs? Do not lower your heating set point!

Next to labor, heating is typically the biggest operating expense for greenhouses. And even though temperatures are beginning to rise, there's still time to maximize profits by using efficient heating strategies. Here are some quick tips for keeping your heating costs lower:

1. Do not lower your heating set point. Lower temperatures increase crop time, leading to longer heating periods.

2. Increase the temperature differential on your theromstat where no heating event occurs. This can eliminate repetitive heating cycling which over time wastes energy.

3. Perform your annual boiler maintenance. This ensures the main consumer of your energy is running as efficiently as possible.

4. Replace any equipment that is over 15 years old with newer higher efficiency equipment.
